LA Sheriff’s department admits preferential treatment given to celebrities

Raquel Maria Dillon of Associated Press reports that the parents of Paris Hilton were able to bypass the line that other visitors waited in for hours.

County Supervisor Don Knabe said he and his colleagues had received many angry e-mails from people who believed [Sheriff Lee] Baca was treating the heiress better than other sick and mentally ill inmates.

Steve Whitmore, a sheriff’s spokesman, deflected criticism about the Hiltons’ visit. He said it was routine for high-profile inmates to receive visitors during lunch, a time when the visiting room is normally cleared out and closed.

Rather than refuting claims of preferential treatment for celebrities, that’s an admission of it. If I lived in Los Angeles County, I’d want Baca recalled. Realistically a jailed celebrity might require a small amount of special treatment if her life or safety would otherwise be threatened (as would anyone else that was at risk), but providing special expedited visitation for her relatives is clearly unnecessary. If the visiting room is normally closed during a certain part of the day, it should be closed to everyone at that time.
