My order from Mouser Electronics, fifteen toggle switches, two pushbutton switches, and two hexadecimal LED displays, arrived today. UPS ground shipping from Mansfield, Texas to Denver, Colorado took two days.
The Elf only needs eleven toggle switches and one pushbutton switch, but I thought that I might as well get a few spares. The LED displays were expensive enough that I didn’t want to spring for spares.
The Avago HDSP-0762 hexadecimal LED displays are essentially form, fit, and function replacement for the original HP 5082-7340 displays. Due to improvements in LED technology, they offer slightly better intensity at lower current than the originals.
I’ve decided not to use a PIC to scan the switches, etc. The FPGA board does have enough I/O, it’s just spread among four connectors. I’ll write VHDL code to debounce the switches.
