The suboptimal way to buy gasoline, take II

The needle was on E again, so I stopped at my usual gas station, around 9:30 PM. My only means of payment was a hundred dollar bill, but I was going to buy over 24 gallons of regular (87 octane) at $3.419 per gallon, so I didn’t expect that would be a problem.  The change would be less than $20.

The gas station had no change whatsoever.   Apparently even if I’d only wanted to buy $5 worth out of a $20 bill, I wouldn’t have been able to do it.  This seems absurd.

I made it to another station and didn’t have a problem.

I don’t normally like to let the needle get close to E, but circumstances lately have conspired to keep it in that vicinity.
