Tire repair

A few months ago I ran over some kind of debris in the road, which slashed the sidewall of one of my tires (original equipment Firestone “Wilderness LE” P265/70R16). I purchased a new pair of Firestone “Destination LE” tires at the Sunnyvale Wheelworks, and kept the extra Wilderness LE as a “spare spare”. More recently I bought an extra rim, the same GM 16×6.5J rim used for the spare tire. I’ve been meaning to go back to Wheelworks to get the tire mounted, but hadn’t gotten around to it.

Today I got around to it, because yesterday my left rear tire (one of the remaining Winderness LE tires) started leaking. I had to fill it twice yesterday and once this morning. I spent $81 at Wheelworks to get the tire fixed, and shuffle the tires and rims around. They removed a bolt with a strange head from the tire.  It would have been only $31 if I hadn’t needed the rims rearranged. Now my two remaining undamaged Winderness LE tires are on the front wheels, the two Destination LE tires are on the rear wheels, and the repaired Wilderness LE is on the extra rim. Oh, and the original spare Wilderness LE is still the spare.

Now I’ll have to stop by the hardware store to get a hook to hang the extra tire and rim in the garage.

I haven’t noticed much difference between the Wilderness LE and Destination LE on dry pavement, but the Destination LE is reported to be much better on snow. I’ll likely get some experience with that on road trips for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
