I was moving into a large apartment in a highrise, which I was going to share with a friend. He wasn’t there when I arrived. As I was moving in and unpacking, another guy showed up and started poking around into my stuff. He said he was my other roommate. He wandered back out, and said he’d see me later.
I left to meet my friend for dinner. He said that we didn’t have another roommate. When we got back to the apartment, all of my stereo and video equipment was gone, as was most of my computer equipment and various other items. I called the police, and an officer showed up to take a report.
We discovered some of my stuff abandoned in a hallway in another part of the building; the thief had discarded stuff he’d apparently decided wasn’t valuable. The police found that the thief actually lived in the same building. They didn’t arrest him, though, they just wrote him a summons to appear in court at a later date.
I really needed the data on the disks in my computers, so I begged the guy to please give the disks back to me, or at least let me copy them. He said that I could have the drives back, but he had already reformatted them.
