I went to the grocery store with my grandmother Dorothy. I don’t remember too much about that, other than that there was a special on shrimp, so I bought five pounds.
Later I was riding around on a Segway. I took a shortcut through a building in a medical center. As I passed by an indoor swimming pool I wondered whether they offered pool memberships to the public. When I exited the building, I encountered my grandfather Carl (Dorothy’s husband). He had just finished a round of golf, and was saying goodbye to his buddies. He asked if I wanted a ride home, and said that I could put the Segway in the trunk.
The car was my great-grandmother Lorena’s Chevrolet Impala, and she was driving. My grandfather and I got in. We were going to the grocery store to get food for a big dinner at my mother’s house. Traffic was terrible, and we made a few wrong turns, but we finally got to the grocery store (a different one).
It was a huge store, and had two parking lots on opposite sides of the building. There were special lanes for taxis and buses; the layout was more like an airport terminal than a grocery store. It turned out that we had parked on the wrong side of the building, so I offered to get the car and drive it around to pick her and the groceries up. I’m not sure where Carl disappeared to.
I rarely seem to have dreams that offer any special insight into the real world, but this was one. When I awakened, I realized that I’d never before considered that my maternal grandparents (Dorothy and Carl) and great-grandmother (Viola) were not very friendly with my paternal great-grandparents (Lorena and Giles).
When I was young, I often visited my grandparents and great-grandmother in the summer. Dorothy would occasionally take me over to visit my great-grandparents, and I’m sure she must have spoken to Lorena on the phone to arrange that, but she never entered Lorena’s house, nor did Lorena and Giles ever visit Dorothy and Carl’s house.
