Mama Get Your Hammer (There’s a Fly on Baby’s Head)

I was listening to the “Theme Time Radio Hour with your host Bob Dylan,” and he played “Mama Get Your Hammer (There’s a Fly on Baby’s Head)” by the Bobby Peterson Quartet.Â Aside from being an amusing song, it was an interesting juxtaposition with a billboard I happened to be driving past at the time: “Don’t Shake Your Baby”.

More musical advice about babies is available inÂ The Four Postmen‘s song “The Chainsaw Juggler”:

Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water, unless it’s floating face down.

And then there’s the classic Shel Silverstein song “Someone Ate the Baby.”

In a forum I read, someone posted a link to the song Code Monkey by Jonathan Coulton.Â He makes his works available under a Creative Commons license, so you can legally share them.Â I liked this song, so I purchased it, and I’m going to try some of his others.

Waiting is NOT the answer

As I drove home late last night (actually early this morning), there was some annoying advertisement on KUFX, so I switched to KFOG.Â KFOG plays some stuff I like, but they play an excess of new “whiny rock”.Â I caught the second half of a song I hadn’t heard before, John Mayer’s “Waiting on the World to Change”:

it’s not that we don’t care,
we just know that the fight ain’t fair
so we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

This reminded me of the old Ten Years After song I used to like, “I’d like to Change the World”:

I’d love to change the world
But I don’t know what to do
So I’ll leave it up to you

Once I actually paid attention to the lyrics, I started finding the song annoying.Â I can’t claim to have any of the answers to the world’s problems, but shrugging one’s shoulders and leaving it up to someone else is pretty unlikely to have the desired effect.

Eric Clapton concert

I went to the Eric Clapton concert in San Jose yesterday with Steve and Chun. It was one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended. Even the opening act, Robert Randolph and the Family Band was great. Eric Clapton played all the big hits I expected, as well as other songs I haven’t heard too often, and some that were new to me.

I was expecting “Layla” for the encore, and Steve was expecting “Cocaine”, but actually he played both in the main set. Eric Clapton had Robert Randolph join his band on stage for the encore, which was “Sunshine of Your Love”, and one other song (but I don’t recall which).
