Two friends and I went out to dinner and a movie in Palo Alto tonight. We had a wonderful dinner at Evvia; I had the Katsiki Yiouvetsi, which is a goat casserole braised with pearl onions, artichokes, and feta cheese. I’d never had goat meat before, and found it to be quite tasty. It is also apparently low in fat and cholesterol.

Afterward we saw Tarsem‘s The Fall, which had absolutely stunning cinematography as well as an engaging plot. Set in a hospital in Los Angeles in the early 20th century, it is the story of Alexandria, a young girl with a broken arm from falling while picking oranges, who befriends another patient, Ray, an actor injured in fall in a movie stunt. Alexandria is enthralled by the epic tale of love and revenge Ray spins, but perhaps everything isn’t quite what it seems.

This was actually the second time I’ve seen The Fall; I wanted to see it again both because of the visual beauty, and to catch a few minor plot details I missed the first time. I’d love to get this film on Blu-Ray.

On the way to a friend’s house, I went to a drive-through and ordered a burger and a shake. I still had the several-day-old remainder of a beverage in the cupholder that I needed to dispose of, but there was a waste can just beyond the pickup window, so after I got my order I pulled forward and used it.

After I ate my burger, I reached for milkshake, and discovered that I still had the old beverage, and had thrown the shake away.

That did save me 660 calories. Maybe I should have bought three shakes and thrown all three away, and I could have saved nearly 2000 calories!

Several times a week I eat at Steven’s Cheesesteaks in Sunnyvale. The restaurant is decorated with a lot of pictures and memorabilia relating to Philadelphia, but there is also an autographed 1990 San Francisco 49ers team picture. Or at least there was, until some miscreant stole it sometime between 7 and 8 PM on Monday evening.

It’s probably worth a fair bit of money, but also has a lot of sentimental value to Steven.

If you see a 1990 49ers team picture being sold on eBay, Craigslist, etc., please report it to the Sunnyvale police department.

Update:

Sal Pizarro wrote about the theft on Thursday in his column in the San Jose Mercury News.

I purchased one package of the “Rosemary & Sun-Dried Tomato” version.
The MyGourmet web site states that they use low mercury tuna, averaging 95% less mercury than FDA standards, and that they have had a dolphin-safe policy since 1990.

Back when I was in college before, and always short of money, I did what many students have done over the years, and subsisted largely on one of the least expensive foods available, boxed macaroni and cheese. But when you think of macaroni and cheese, don’t think of the high-quality product from the likes of Kraft. No, I usually had to buy the generic product, which was less than half the price but with comensurate taste. I kept a few boxes of Kraft, “the good stuff”, on hand for special occasions.

But there are some foods (and I use the term loosely) that even a poor college student won’t eat. One day I was looking at cheeses in the grocery store, and saw a bunch of products labelled “cheese food”. These are products with cheese content below the minimum percentage required by the FDA to be labelled as cheese. That didn’t bother me too much; that’s the kind of stuff that was in the generic macaroni and cheese boxes.

Then I saw a package labelled “cheese food substitute”. I can only surmise that such a product contains no cheese at all, but I have no idea what it’s actually made of. Soybeans and pressed sawdust? I wasn’t about to try it.

I’ve never again seen “cheese food substitute”, but then again, I haven’t gone looking for it. It’s probably still out there. Google shows 181 hits on a search, but I didn’t bother to read any of them.

While cold pizza is OK for breakfast, cold Chicken Burrito Supremes are not.

Mission College parking lot C offers a reasonably good view of the fireworks display on July 3 at the nearby Great America theme park.

Getting out of the vicinity of Mission College around 10:30 PM on July 3 takes a very long time.

At 6:30 AM, it takes ten minutes to leave home, get on the freeway, realize that I forgot my backpack containing my textbook, homework, etc., turn around at the next exit, and go home.

At 6:30 AM, traffic on southbound I-880 is light.

At 6:40 AM, traffic on southbound I-880 is heavy and is starting to get backed up.

Hypothetically speaking, if your last (only) class of the day on the DeAnza college campus were to end around 9:30 AM, you could probably resell a $2 day parking pass to another student for $1. However, doing so probably would violate some regulation, so perhaps it’s not worth it.
