I don’t like laugh tracks either, but I can tolerate them if they aren’t used as a crutch (a feeble attempt to make material that is only very slightly funny seem more funny).

Without the laugh track, how would the average couch potato know when it was funny?

According to the Wikipedia article on the laugh track, the DVDs of the M*A*S*H series allow the viewer to choose to listen with or without the laugh track. We need more DVDs (or Blu-Ray discs) with that feature.
