I just received this death threat by email. I can’t imagine that anyone would actually be willing to spend $650K to kill me. I’m guessing that it’s an attempt at extortion; otherwise there would be no point to let a victim know that a contract has been taken out on him. Though it has a Yahoo email address, the headers show that it was not received from Yahoo.
Update: this email has been going around for more than a month, with minor variations. It’s a variant on phishing and advance fee fraud. Kevin Poulsen posted about it on 23 March 2007, and references an FBI advisory from 15 January 2007.

It seems particularly entertaining that they claim I need to keep the threat secret, when they have posted as a publicly visible blog comment.
So what’s with these death threats? This guy knows my full name.

They’re getting your name from publicly available information. Try doing a Google search for your own email address, and see what you can find.
The whole thing is a scam. They won’t go any further than getting information that’s readily available to try to convince you that it’s real, but it’s not.

Her’s was sent from a fake email account registed to a corperate high-up
who died over 2 years ago.
Got a message from him. Replied and I let him know that i am currently a Security Hacker for Mcafee, and that i am also a former Google employee. His original Ip, before he proxied, is in Wisconsin.
It would be nice if the FBI could identify these miscreants and prosecute them for extortion. However, I doubt that it will happen. Like most spam, this probably is sent by botnets, and it’s very difficult to trace the origin of their command & control. Even if you have the IP address that the email originated from, that’s likely just a zombie machine whose owner has no idea that it’s being abused.
On the one hand, it seems to me that it might be a good idea to hold vendors of commercial software liable for monetary damages and potential criminal charges if they ship software with vulnerabilities that allow machines to be “pwned”. On the other hand, that could destroy the open source/free software ecosystem.
Well since part of the email we rec’d included the mention of ransom (last I heard kidnapping is a federal offense), they should get hard time. While I’m for the protection of free speech, threats, extortion and lies should not be tolerated!

now, i did actually make a police report and im wondering if they really know this or if they are just saying this to scare me?? either way, anyone have any idea how i should handle this?
They don’t actually know anything about you, and it’s entirely a scam.
Sometimes they will actually try to dig up publicly-available information about you to try to make the threat seem more authentic, but even then it is no.
If someone actually wanted to take out a contract on you, it would cost a lot more than they are trying to extort from you, and if they’d already been paid as they claim, they would just do it, not try to get a few measly thousand dollars more from you.
I recieved the following email today. It really scared me so I called the police and my husband left work because I was so upset. Now I feel like a complete idiot as I see several people have recieved this same email. These people need to be punished for this! What a bunch of BS!!!!!!

These e-mails are so cruel and understandably deeply disturbing. I still can’t resist this little irony: in the original blog post, the self-described hit man wrote: “and i have signed a contract of $650,000 ….” Wow! A signed contract? What’s wrong with this picture (aside from the dollar amount and the fact that the ‘client’ would actually sign a contract/confession)? Would someone willing to commit murder for money be so meek as to need the ‘protection’ of a signed contract - is he worried about being stiffed by the client and having no recourse other than hiring a lawyer and suing in the court system?! Oh yeah, that will go real well. My, um, guess is that these things are done verbally.
Of course I’m being sarcastic. To be serious, though, has anyone heard of a sting operation (this seems prime for it) where law enforcement takes over from the e-mail recipient and plays along, sending money? The federal charges would be significant - likely including the making of terroristic threats, extortion, wire fraud, etc., and the publicity from just one prosecution would do a lot to stop this thing.
By the way, the made-up ‘hit man’ seems very diligent in some of the other versions of the e-mail about honoring his commitment, as he claims he’d already been paid - he gives his recipients “42 hours” as the deadline for killing them. He sounds extremely punctual, if not OCD…. Duh - in the real world he would have taken the money, turned in the person who paid him and walked off with the cash.
Even though I just defused some of this (and some of it is laughable), if I were to get one of these, I’d still find it disturbing. The sociopaths who are sending these e-mails are creating real fear in tens of thousands of people in the name of just trying to make a buck. At least the Nigerian Scam is predicated on greed and doesn’t upset the recipients who read those e-mails. This does.

My wife got the same similar email today. I told her it was very general and vague in nature. no mention of personal stuff, the grammer was poor at best and i told her that it was an upfront scam for money or just a prank fear letter. she called the police anyway to file a report and after looking up the sender…”killervisions@gmail.com” i confirmed the email as a prank mass phishing scam. if you dont want people to have your first name just put initials on your email prefs for people to see only..your first name really doesnt mean anything but it will personalize the letter if you get one..so just put initials or nick names..then you will know it was phished from your email.

So we just received this e-mail also at work. Which is really funny because I work for a psychological services company and we have had real death threats before. I think that this person really needs to seek out some help. Even if they are doing this as a scam. We have some great doctors at our facility, this person is more than welcome to contact our office. One of the doctors that read this email has only one this to say to this person.

I got the same stupid e-mail today. I wrote them back a bunch of nonsense how it was great he had been hired to kill me as I had just found out I was dying of cancer. I asked him to contact me so we could plan a time and place etc. for him to carry out my execution.

Hey all…glad I found these blogs…thanks for posting…I got this long letter in my inbox this morning…..death threat? Who is behind this and has anyone taken action with the FBI/police? If so, what advice was given? I am thinking of calling my local police. Some of you are right. This IS the UNITED STATED OF AMERICA…THIS SHOULD NOT AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Received this one this morning so this type of email is still going around. October 24, 2008. Contacted the FBI and seems to be an identified phising scheme.
