Today I received email notification from Mission College that I was named to the Dean’s List. I had a 4.0 GPA in the fall 2006 semester; only 3.0 was required for the Dean’s List. I met that requirement in the spring 2006 semester as well (also 4.0), but did not receive an email notification, though my transcript shows “Academic Standing: Honors” for both semesters.
Given the grade inflation that has happened over the years, I don’t think a 3.0 GPA should really be high enough for honors standing. I’m not just saying that because I would qualify at a higher level; I had poor grades when I was in school before, and my cumulative GPA isn’t actually very good. I’ve worked hard to improve my academic standing, and will continue to do so.
By amazing coincidence, at today’s meeting of the Sigma Iota chapter of the Alpha Gamma Sigma honor society, the Vice President of Student Services told us about a proposal to improve Mission College’s honors and awards program. He showed a comparison of the honors requirements with other community colleges in the area, and most required a minimum GPA of 3.3 for honors.
Under the proposal, the required GPA for the Dean’s Honor List would be raised to 3.25, and there would be a new President’s Honor List with a requirement of 3.50. Notification would be by a signed letter rather than email. There would also be Honors or High Honors recognized at graduation, for cumulative GPA above 3.25 or 3.50. I am in favor of the proposal.
